Genetically engineered (GE)
foods are everywhere - currently, they can be found in 60 to 70% of the food
on supermarket shelves. Despite the fact that these foods are abundant, little
is known about their effects on human health and the environment. GE foods pose
serious risks, including the threat of new allergens, the spread of antibiotic
resistance and the increased use of pesticides.
Although the risks of GE
foods are very serious, the U.S. government has done little to regulate these
ingredients - vitamins and food coloring undergo more testing and regulation
than do GE foods. In addition, companies using GE ingredients are not required
to label their products. To protect our health and our environment, Free The
Planet! is calling on Kraft Foods and supermarkets chains to keep GE ingredients
out of our food until genetically engineered ingredients are safety tested,
labeled and are proven to have no harmful effects to human health or the environment.
Ask Kraft Foods CEO Roger Deromedi to stop using genetically engineered ingredients in Kraft products.
